Apple iPhone 5c poor sales lead to cheaper 8GB model in Europe

The Apple iPhone 5c was supposed to be a phone that helped Apple fight off competition by introducing a slightly cheaper version of the phone, but sales of the device have so far been disappointing. Apple will reportedly try to reignite those efforts with a cheaper 8GB version of the iPhone 5C.

After Caschy posted a document claiming that an 8GB iPhone 5C is launching in Europe shortly, Engadget obtained a photo of the device's packaging that confirmed the news. It now appears that Apple will sell the 8GB iPhone 5c model at O2 Germany for only 509 euros (US $709). While that's still not the cheap option some analysts wrongly expected from Apple, it does provide a sizable discount from the old starting price of an iPhone, which was 589 euros (US $792) for the 16GB model.

An 8GB phone with no option for expandable memory seems like a challenge for many people, but perhaps Apple thinks that the answer to making the iPhone 5c more popular is to make it cost so much less that people won't care or notice that they have less storage space.

The drop 8GB iPhone is expected to be announced the 18th of March.
